Running a server

Users and sharing

Share libraries with family and friends by email, or manage local users and admins.

How you give people access depends on the server's account mode.

Wren TV accounts

With Wren TV accounts, you share by email, and people sign in with their own accounts.

Sharing your server

  1. Go to Manage → Users in the server's web app (the page is called Sharing) and choose Share server.
  2. Enter their email address.
  3. Choose which libraries they can see. All libraries (including future ones) also covers libraries you add later.
  4. Choose Send invite.

Wren TV doesn't send an email, so let them know. The invite becomes access the next time they sign in to Wren TV with that address (or create an account with it). Until then it's listed under Pending invites, where you can cancel it.

Changing or removing access

Under People with access, choose Edit to change someone's libraries and limits, or Remove to take their access away. Changes apply straight away: the server checks access with Wren TV accounts as requests come in. Limits can be set once the person has signed in.

Roles

RoleCan
OwnerEverything: libraries, settings, sharing, stats. The account that claimed the server
SharedBrowse and play the libraries they were given, with their own watch history and settings

Local accounts

With local accounts, you create users yourself in Manage → Users → Add user:

  • Username and password (at least 8 characters). The username can't be changed later.
  • Name: the display name.
  • Admin: admins manage the server and see every library. Leave it off for everyone else.
  • Libraries: the libraries a non-admin user can see.

Edit a user to change their name, libraries, admin status or limits, or to set a new password. Remove deletes the user.

What people can see

Users only see the libraries they were given: on Home, in search, in genres and collections, and through the API. Watch progress, history and playback languages are kept separately for each person.

Owners and admins can see what everyone is watching on the dashboard.

With streaming on, everyone allowed to stream also sees the Streaming Movies and Streaming Shows libraries, and can search for and play titles the server doesn't have.

Streaming and download limits

Set defaults for everyone in Settings → Users, and override them per person when editing a user. The Limits column shows what applies to each person.

SettingDoes
Can play titles streamed through debridOn by default. Off hides the streaming libraries and streaming search results
Device downloadsLets the person download movies and episodes to their devices. Default follows the server setting
Streams at onceHow many things they can play at the same time. Watching the same title on two screens counts once, and a stream left paused for two minutes makes room for a new one
Downloads at onceHow many device downloads they can run together

Leave a number blank to use the server default; 0 means no limit. The server-wide caps in Streaming → Limits apply on top.
