Running a server
Metadata
Posters, descriptions and cast from TMDB, ratings from OMDb, and the metadata language.
TMDB
Wren TV gets posters, backdrops, descriptions, cast, genres, content ratings and collections from The Movie Database (TMDB). You need a free API key:
- Create a TMDB account and open Settings → API.
- Request an API key (choose "Developer", personal use is fine).
- Paste the API Key into Manage → Settings → TMDB API key, or set
WRENTV_TMDB_API_KEY, ormetadata.tmdb_api_keyinwrentv.yaml.
Without a key, titles still appear and play, named after their files, but without artwork or details.
Lookups are made in parallel (8 at a time by default, metadata.workers), and once per season rather than per episode.
Responses are cached in the server's database, so rescans don't repeat them.
Language
metadata.language sets the language of titles, descriptions and artwork, as a TMDB language code. The default is
en-US. Other examples: de-DE, fr-FR, pt-BR, ja-JP.

language: de-DE
Ratings from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic
TMDB only has its own user rating. To show IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores too, add a free
OMDb API key under Manage → Settings → OMDb API key, or set
WRENTV_OMDB_API_KEY or metadata.omdb_api_key.
OMDb looks titles up by their IMDb ID, which TMDB provides. Its answers are cached too.
Artwork
Posters and backdrops are downloaded from TMDB once and cached in the data directory. Players load them from your server, which is fast on your home network and keeps working if TMDB is unreachable.
Wrong or missing matches
- Check the name against naming your files, especially the year.
- Pin the match with a
{tmdb-…}or{imdb-tt…}tag in the folder name. - Or use Fix match on the title's page.
