Running a server

Streaming with debrid

Turn the server into a shared Stremio-style client. Search any movie or show, press play, and it streams through your TorBox, AllDebrid or Real-Debrid account.

With streaming on, everyone you share the server with can search for any movie or show and play it right away, whether or not you have the file. The server finds a release through Stremio addons, checks that your debrid service already has it cached, and streams it to the player through itself. Your files and streamed titles live side by side.

What you need

Turning it on

  1. In the server's web app, go to Manage → Settings → Streaming (in the Mac app: Server → Settings → Streaming).
  2. Tick Enable streaming.
  3. Under Debrid services, paste an API key and choose Check to confirm it's premium. Add more than one if you like and use the arrows to set the order: services are tried top to bottom.
  4. Keep at least one addon. Torrentio and Comet are there by default.
  5. Choose Save changes. The status line turns to On.

Two libraries appear for everyone allowed to stream: Streaming Movies and Streaming Shows.

How it works

  1. Search shows every matching movie and show. Titles on the server come first; the rest are under Stream.
  2. Opening a title adds it to the streaming library with its artwork, seasons and episodes.
  3. Pressing play asks the addons for releases, keeps the ones your debrid service has cached, picks the best match and starts playing, usually within a few seconds. Players show Finding a stream… meanwhile.
  4. In the background, the server saves a stream for each quality you chose (4K and 1080p by default) and, for an episode, looks up the rest of the season. A season pack fills every episode it contains at once.

Only the links are stored, in the database. Nothing is written to your media folders unless you turn on downloads.

Streams and files together

  • A file for the same movie or episode in a regular library takes over: the streamed copy is hidden and the file plays.
  • Streamed titles play through the server, so viewers never see debrid links, and the usual playback ladder applies: direct play, remux or transcode.
  • If you disconnect every debrid key (or turn streaming off), streamed titles disappear. Your files are untouched, and the streams come back if you reconnect.

When a stream stops working

Debrid links expire. When one does, the server asks the service for a fresh link, re-adding the release if needed. After repeated failures it forgets that stream and searches again the next time someone presses play. Admins can force this with Find new streams on a title (in the Mac app: Stream → Find New Streams).

If no cached release exists, the player says so. Try again later: popular releases are usually cached quickly.

Quality and size

SettingDoes
QualityA stream is saved for each quality ticked: 4K (2160p), 1080p, 720p. The player picks between them like versions of a file
GB maxThe largest file allowed at that quality. It applies to the episode that plays, not a whole season pack. Blank means any size
Find streams for the rest of the seasonLooks up the other episodes of a season in the background after one plays

Camera recordings, telesyncs, screeners and AI-upscaled releases are always skipped. Releases with more seeders, WEB-DL, Blu-ray, Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Atmos rank higher.

Addons

Any Stremio addon that lists torrent streams works. Paste its manifest URL (ending in manifest.json) under Addons and choose Add addon; it's checked first. Untick an addon to pause it, or remove it. Results from every enabled addon are merged.

If you configured an addon on its own website (for example with a debrid key or filters), paste the full configured URL.

Downloading to the server

Streamed titles can also be saved as ordinary files:

  • Download mode (Saving to the server → Download what's watched) downloads every title someone streams.
  • Download to server on a title (admins) downloads one movie, an episode, a season or a whole show.

Choose a movie library and a show library for downloads; they need a folder the server can write to (in Docker, mount that folder without :ro). Files are named so the scanner matches them, such as Dune - Part Two (2024) {tmdb-693134}/Dune - Part Two (2024) - 2160p.mkv. Once a file is in place it replaces the stream.

Follow progress, cancel or retry under Manage → Downloads. Server downloads stop when the total downloaded quota is reached or the disk gets close to the keep this much free amount.

Viewers can also save titles to their own devices: see downloads.

Limits

All under Settings → Streaming → Limits. Blank (or 0) means no limit.

Keys can also come from WRENTV_TORBOX_API_KEY, WRENTV_ALLDEBRID_API_KEY and WRENTV_REALDEBRID_API_KEY, and WRENTV_STREAMING=true turns it on.

Upgrading from torrents

Earlier versions added torrents by magnet link. That system is gone: upgrading removes torrent-backed items and the /api/torrents and /api/integration/torrents endpoints. A Real-Debrid key from the old torrents settings carries over to streaming, which you then turn on in Settings → Streaming. Port 42069 is no longer used.
